Jon Stewart Returns To 'The Daily Show'

Plus: Corporate media ignores Trump for... this?

Good morning and Happy Monday! Welcome to The Movement from NOTICE News, where we envision a world that’s driven by human decency, compassion and love—not corporate greed and growth. We’re news for the people, not the profit. 🌹

In today’s newsletter:

Heeerrrrreee’s Jonny!

The King returns.

The wait is finally over: one of the most trusted newscasters in the United States returns to his desk tonight after an eight year hiatus. Jon Stewart begins his election-year gig as host of The Daily Show’s Monday episodes tonight at 11 p.m. ET. In addition to hosting the Monday night episodes, Stewart has agreed to executive produce the other nights to help shape the show’s coverage during this crucial election year.

It’s not hyperbole to say that during his 16 year run at the helm of the show, Stewart redefined late night and television satire more generally. Instead of stupid pet tricks or mindlessly yucking it up with celebrities, Stewart consistently delivered a funny, fresh take on the news that put hypocrites and spin-master politicians on notice.

In fact, when legendary CBS newsman Walter Cronkite died in 2009, who was once considered the “most trusted man in America,” a poll from TIME Magazine found that title now went to Stewart. Despite the fact that he eschewed the title of journalist, studies found that his Daily Show was a key source of news for younger audiences.

But but but: A lot has changed since Stewart left his desk in 2015. Signing off, Jon warned us that Americans needed to be forever vigilant against bullshit. “If you smell something, say something.” Three months later, Donald Trump was elected president. Not to mention, the audience (and, worth noting because we live in a capitalist hellscape, the business) of late night and basic cable more generally has been obliterated.

So will Stewart be able to cut through the noise this time? Will he retake the title of the most trusted man in news? We don’t know, but we’ll certainly be watching.

Shot: Here’s a short teaser Comedy Central put out of Jon back behind the desk. Chaser: Watch Jon Stewart destroy Tucker Carlson, and political blather on cable news more generally, on CNN’s Crossfire back in 2004.

Corporate media buries Trump comments, plasters stories about Biden’s age

On Saturday, disgraced former president and current Republican frontrunner Donald Trump made a stunning comment at a political rally in Conway, South Carolina: if he’s reelected, Russia could do “whatever the hell they want” to our NATO allies that he deems do not pay enough for their defense.

Trump was effectively saying he would ignore a central tenant of the alliance—that an attack on one is an attack on all—essentially encouraging Putin to attack our allies. The comments were condemned by the White House, NATO, and European leaders.
