DEMOCRACY IN DANGER
The rule of law, dismantled in real time

We’re not ones to ring alarm bells at NOTICE News. Trump’s strategy is to flood the zone with so much shit—so many lies, so many legally questionable moves—that his opponents don’t even know where to begin fighting back.
BUT THIS IS DIFFERENT: The Trump administration’s seeming defiance of a federal judge this weekend—and the accompanying rhetoric—should scare the shit out of every American.
THE BACKGROUND: Over the weekend, the Trump administration either defied—or came dangerously close to defying—an order from a federal judge.
It all started Saturday when the administration decided to use an obscure, 18th century law to speed up the deportation of immigrants without going through the regular legal proceedings.
At around 6:45 p.m. ET, U.S. District Judge James E. Boasberg, an Obama appointee, halted the deportations and ordered that any planes in the air be turned around.
But planes in the air weren’t turned around—some may have even taken off—and more than 200 immigrants were delivered to a notorious jail in El Salvador, all without due process.
IT GETS WORSE: After the ruling, El Salvador’s president, who had offered up his jail in the first place, tweeted a sarcastic response to the judge’s ruling that was recirculated by the White House.
And on Monday, the administration’s fascist border czar, Tom Homan, said the quiet part out loud on Fox News: “I don't care what the judges think.”
WHERE THINGS STAND: Last night, Judge Boasberg held a hearing to determine if the administration violated his order.
But the lawyer from the Justice Department stonewalled the judge, refusing to answer questions under the guise of national security.
Judge Boasberg, who at one point oversaw the nation’s top, classified court for national security matters, has given the administration until noon ET today to answer questions about when the planes took off.
WHAT COULD HAPPEN NEXT: Judge Boasberg could hold DOJ officials in contempt, potentially jailing them or imposing fines if they refuse to comply.
If the Trump administration continues to defy the court, it could escalate into a constitutional crisis, forcing intervention from higher courts or Congress.
WHY IT MATTERS: The rule of law in the United States won’t be abolished all at once. But it can crumble brick by brick—each ignored court order, each unchecked power grab, each moment when those in power defy accountability.
If the judiciary’s rulings can be openly defied without consequence, then the very foundation of constitutional governance begins to erode, paving the way for authoritarian rule.
This is one story to keep an eye on.
📰 Most important stories right now
There’s a lot of sh*t out there. Here’s what’s actually important—and why.
Why it matters: Resuming its genocide in Gaza—fully funded by American tax payers—Israel shatters a fragile two month period of peace. Israel says it will not stop until Hamas is totally destroyed and the hostages are released, and Hamas won’t release the hostages until the war stops. Full story from the AP.
Why it matters: Trump's call with Putin could determine whether a fragile ceasefire takes hold or if Russia's war in Ukraine continues unchecked. His willingness to negotiate with Putin—who has set extreme demands—raises concerns about whether he will sell out a democracy to appease a dictator. Full story from NPR.
Why it matters: This is some pretty ballsy stuff from a conman who once said he could declassify documents just by thinking it. His push to criminalize the Jan. 6 committee members while pardoning insurrectionists shows his authoritarian instincts in action, and could signal what’s to come. Full story from ABC News.
TODAY IN HOPE
The Democrats new leader?

Just hours after we proudly declared that the Democrats had finally grown some balls, Chuck Schumer made us liars and rolled over for Donald Trump.
In the aftermath of Schumer and 9 other Democratic senators’ betrayal, some are asking, is it time for a fresh, new voice to be the leader of the Democratic party?
If polls are any indication, all signs point to one person: Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
DRIVING THE NEWS: A new poll from CNN (taken before the aforementioned betrayal) again found the majority of Democrats believe the party needs to do more to “stop the Republican agenda.”
When asked to name “the Democratic leader they feel ‘best reflects the core values’ of the party,” the name that got the most votes was AOC.
THE BACKGROUND: As establishment Dems play dead, fascists are gutting the federal government. But Progressives have been fighting back—and AOC has been at the forefront of that.
In the hours after Schumer announced he would support the Republican spending plan that turns the government in to a slush fund for Elon Musk, AOC ripped into the senator on CNN, saying he’s profoundly misreading the moment.
Over the weekend, AOC announced she would join Bernie’s on-going "Fighting Oligarchy" tour this week, which is drawing tens of thousands of voters out in swing states.
BUT BUT BUT: Although AOC topped the CNN poll, the race was highly competitive.
10% of respondents named AOC, 9% named Kamala Harris, 8% named Bernie Sanders, and 6% named Hakeem Jeffries.
But with 18% of Democrats backing the two most progressive and socialist voices in a wide-open contest, it’s a clear sign of the movement’s strength.
🗳️ Question of the day
Given AOC’s emergence as a leader in the party, do you think she could win the presidency in 2028? Tell us why or why not after you vote!
Could AOC win the presidency in 2028? |
LAST WEEK’S QUESTION: On Thursday we asked, do you think Trump is wrecking the economy on purpose? Overwhelmingly, you said YES.

READERS WRITE: Tisa voted YES and said: “Breaking the citizens physically, emotionally, financially is a first step to becoming a dictator. Plain and simple.”
Sandra also voted YES: “I believe he doesn’t care if people live or die as long as his rich friends benefit. If anyone benefits from the recession it will only be the rich. He lies telling normal people it will be ok. It won’t.”
AP Bennett agreed: "He promised his very rich friends he would make them richer- one promise he is keeping ”
Still others voted no. Lorna said: “Maybe his cohorts are, but Trump doesn't have the brains.”
