Even if Mamdani loses, the people have already won

Today, New Yorkers head to the polls—but in many ways, the most important part of this election has already happened. The people have already won.

WHAT’S HAPPENING: Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist born in Uganda and raised in Manhattan, has done what few thought possible.

  • The final pre-election poll shows Mamdani leading disgraced former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic mayoral primary.

But this isn’t just a strong campaign—it’s a movement. In the nation’s largest city, Mamdani has put working-class demands at the center and made it mainstream to question capitalism itself.

YES, AND: His campaign offers a playbook for progressives across the country:

  1. Make real issues impossible to ignore. Mamdani put affordability front and center.

  2. Go where the people are. His campaign mastered short, viral videos, making him the first American candidate of the TikTok era.

Win or lose, Mamdani has already proven that the working class won’t be silenced. We won’t let fascists and capitalists destroy this country without a fight.

ZOOM OUT: His campaign is the latest chapter in a movement that stretches from Occupy Wall Street to Bernie’s presidential runs—and whatever comes next will build on what Zohran sparked.

WHAT’S NEXT: Even though voting ends today, we likely won’t know the results for at least another week.

  • That’s because NYC uses ranked choice voting. Tonight’s results will only include first-choice votes.

Preliminary ranked choice tabulations will be released a week from now—after all ballots are counted and corrected.

SAVE FOR LATER: You can watch the election results roll in tonight here via PBS Newshour.

🗞️ Making News

Trump announces ceasefire that immediately collapses

Just hours after Trump announced a ceasefire between Iran and Israel and touting it would “last forever,” the deal has apparently fallen apart. Neither party officially confirmed the agreement, and both have already been trading fire this morning. Here’s the latest from CNN.

Netanyahu plotted Iran War months ago—then pulled Trump in

A stunning new investigation reveals Israel planned its strike on Iran months ago—then pressured Trump to join in. Intelligence on Iran’s nuclear program was murky, but assassinations were already underway. Diplomacy, it turns out, was never the plan. Full story from The Washington Post.

Supreme Court lets Trump deport migrants to third countries

In a devastating blow that will ruin countless lives, the nation’s highest court ruled that Trump could restart deportations to countries migrants aren’t from—even when they may face torture or death. One heartless DHS official celebrated by saying, “Fire up the deportation planes.” Justice Sotomayor warned the decision exposes “thousands” to grave harm. Full story from AP.

Trump’s “big beautiful bill” is deeply unpopular

Poll after poll shows voters hate it—even Trump’s base. The bill slashes Medicaid, expands tax cuts for the rich, and kicks millions off health care. Now Republicans in the Senate are scrambling to pass it before July 4… and before public backlash gets worse. Full story from NBC News.

ICE’s cowardly masked abductions spark backlash in California

California leaders are standing up to Trump’s gestapo terror force ICE. One LA mayor ordered his police to intervene. State lawmakers are introducing a bill to ban masked federal raids. The message: if ICE won’t follow the law, local officials will make them. Full story from Common Dreams.

➡️ Question of the Day

Yesterday we asked, do you think Trump should be impeached? The verdict was clear.

Richard summed it up nicely: “He is leading our country into disaster, has broken laws, defied court orders, and is using the Presidency to line his pockets.”

CP voted yes and said it should go further: “Impeachment is only the tip of the iceberg. Trump should be imprisoned.”

Still others voted no. Peterson said: “It's pointless. He won't be removed and it's just a waste of time. Should he be President? Absolutely not.”

TODAY’S QUESTION: Today we want to know—do you think Democrats are doing enough to stop Trump? Tell us why or why not after you vote!

IN DEPTH

Meet the 22-year-old Trump super fan running counterterrorism

As America fights yet another war in the Middle East, the man now overseeing our main counterterrorism office is a 22-year-old Trump superfan with no experience in national security.

WHAT’S HAPPENING: A bombshell ProPublica investigation reveals that Thomas Fugate—who graduated from college just last year—is now running the Department of Homeland Security’s Center for Prevention Programs and Partnerships.

  • Known as CP3, the office oversees an $18 million grant program to stop hate-fueled violence, school shootings, and domestic extremism.

Before this, Fugate was a Trump campaign worker, a grocery store clerk, and secretary general of his college Model UN club.

WHY IT MATTERS: Fugate’s appointment shocked terrorism experts, grant recipients, and even CP3 staff.

  • The office—once staffed by career public servants and national security experts—has been gutted under Trump’s return. DHS has shifted focus from preventing domestic terror to a singular obsession with immigration.

The result? An underfunded, demoralized office with fewer than 20 staffers and a first-time manager many say is in way over his head. One former DHS official called it “like putting the intern in charge.”

ZOOM OUT: Fugate isn’t just unqualified—he’s symbolic. His rise shows how Trump’s second term is replacing expertise with blind loyalty.

  • Some insiders suspect his real role is to steer CP3’s remaining resources to MAGA-aligned sheriffs and eventually shut it down.

WHAT’S NEXT: Fugate’s appointment shows Trump’s willingness to sacrifice anything—including the country’s security—in exchange for loyalty.

These are scary times indeed.
