Good morning! It’s Thursday, February 20. In today’s Morning Update:

THE BIG PICTURE

This is the high water mark for Donald Trump

Trump may be dominating the conversation, but make no mistake—if you look at the numbers, this is the high water mark for Donald Trump.

Trump’s base and conservative media may love his rampaging through the federal workforce, but the public is less impressed. Two new polls this week show that Trump’s approval rating is already sinking.

YES, AND: According to new polling from Quinnipiac University, Trump is behind on every key issue important to voters:

  • On immigration: 49% disapprove of Trump while 46% approve

  • On the economy: 48% disapprove, 44% approve

  • On trade: 49% disapprove, 42% approve

  • On federal government layoffs: 49% disapprove, 41% approve

And that’s BEFORE the effects of Trump’s disastrous tariffs have begun to be felt. Expect public disapproval of Trump to continue to plummet as life (and eggs) get more and more expensive.

THE BIG PICTURE: All this spells doom for Republicans in the 2026 midterms—when it’s highly likely Democrats will retake the House and reign in Trump and his neofascist agenda.

  • Republicans only have a 5 seat majority in the House, the thinnest majority in modern times.

  • Only twice since 1938 has an incumbent President’s party picked up seats in the midterms; every other time they’ve lost seats.

There’s no doubt Trump, Elon, and his goons can cause a lot of damage until then—but that doesn’t mean it’s over. Despite what he tweets, Donald Trump is not a king.

📰 Most Important News This Week

There’s a lot of sh*t out there. Here’s what’s actually important and why.

Why it matters: Trump’s alignment with Russian talking points marks a seismic shift in U.S. foreign policy, emboldening Russia and undermining Ukraine’s defense against Putin’s invasion. Some are saying it’s the end of the post-war order that’s been dominated by America since the end of World War II. Full story from Politico

Why it matters: The Federal Reserve is supposed to be independent to keep politicians from meddling in economic policy for short term gain. The Fed tries to take the long view, which can make certain decisions (like keeping interests rate high to cool inflation) very unpopular in the short term. Trump’s latest actions erode that independence, and that could be very, very bad. Full story from The Washington Post

Why it matters: While it’s common for new presidents to replace US attorneys, Trump’s aggressive purge is an attempt to undermine judicial independence and consolidate power. Typically, incoming presidents request resignations gradually, allowing for orderly transitions—but not Trump. Full story from The Guardian

FEEL THE BERN

Bernie’s plan to fight Trumpism hits the road

Bernie Sanders has a plan to defeat Trumpism—and he’s hitting the road to sell that plan to the American people.

DRIVING THE NEWS: Earlier this week, Sanders announced he will be hosting town hall meetings in Omaha, Nebraska, on Friday night and Iowa City, Iowa, on Saturday morning, with plans for more grassroots events nationwide in the coming months.

The meetings are all part of his plan to get voters to put pressure on Republicans, and stop them from extending Trump’s 2017 tax cuts that mostly benefited the super rich.

BERNIE’S PLAN: With a razor-thin GOP House majority, just two Republican defectors can block extremist legislation. Sanders says he aims to mobilize grassroots pressure in swing districts to make that happen.

  • “Trumpism will not be defeated by politicians inside the DC beltway,” Sanders writes. “It will only be defeated by millions of Americans, in every state in this country, coming together in a strong, grassroots movement.”

WHAT'S NEXT: Sanders says the two town halls this weekend are only the beginning; he and other Progressives will be hitting the road more to make sure grassroots power—not billionaire cash—shapes the future.
