Trump completely loses it on reporter over Qatar jet

Donald Trump is sick of answering questions about that “gift” of a luxury jet from oil barons in Qatar.

Just ask NBC News journalist Peter Alexander, who was the recipient of an unhinged tirade when he pressed Trump after the plane had been formally accepted yesterday by the Defense Department.

THE DETAILS: The outburst happened during a chaotic Oval Office meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.

As soon as the lights came up, Alexander asked Trump about the jet. Trump cut him off immediately.

“What are you talking about? You oughta get out of here... you're a terrible reporter. You don't have what it takes to be a reporter. You're not smart enough... [Comcast CEO] Brian Roberts and the people that run that place they ought to be investigated."

Trump to NBC News reporter Peter Alexander

THE BACKGROUND: The $400 million luxury jet offered by Qatar has been denounced by members of both parties as pure corruption.

  • Alexander, just doing his job, was asking why the Pentagon accepted such an extravagant gift. Trump’s meltdown again shows how fragile he is.

Trump kept lashing out, later calling Alexander a "jerk" and suggesting NBC executives should be "investigated"—an authoritarian threat to a free press that’s become commonplace in this fascist administration.

Ramaphosa, trying to defuse the moment, joked, "I'm sorry, I don't have a plane to give you." Trump replied, "I wish you did. I'd take it."

WHY IT MATTERS: Accepting luxury gifts from fossil fuel barons is troubling enough. But Trump’s rage at being questioned highlights a deeper issue: his disdain for transparency, the press, and basic democratic norms.

Everyday Americans deserve better than a president who treats public office like a billionaire swap meet.

Target pays the price for cutting DEI, Trump’s trade war

The retail giant took a beating this past quarter thanks to Trump’s idiotic trade war and blowback from the company’s rollback of DEI policies. ➡️ Question of the Day

Yesterday we asked, do you think AOC Is the new face of the Democratic party? You guys seemed to agree with recent polling.

Joysnana voted yes and said, “She is doing all she can for us. She doesn’t take corporate money for bribes and really wants to make our world a better place!”

Luguzek also voted yes. “It's time for the DNC to realize that they need to have a direction and not try to appease everyone. They need someone who is confident and unapologetic in their approach to service to the people.”

Still, others expressed doubt given our country’s racism and sexism. Shaun said, “I admire her. I want her to represent me. However this country is too misogynistic to make her president.”

TODAY’S QUESTION: That said, do you think the U.S. will elect a woman president soon? (Not whether they should—but whether they will.) Tell us why or why not after you vote.

IN DEPTH

Trump’s tax cuts for the rich are a huge risk

Economists are warning that Trump’s proposed tax cuts for the wealthy are a huge risk that could trigger the next global economic crisis.

WHAT’S HAPPENING: Trump and Republicans are trying to push through Congress a “big, beautiful bill” that has massive tax cuts for the wealthy.

Even with those “savings,” it won’t be enough to cover the lost revenue, so the government would be forced to take on even more debt.

THE TRICKY PART: But governments don’t go into debt like a normal person or business—governments go into debt by selling bonds.

  • A bond is basically an I-O-U. Investors give a government money—and in return, they get a promise that they will eventually get their money back plus interest (usually in one to 30 years).

Traditionally, bonds from the U.S. government have been considered a very safe investment—because investors believed the government would pay them back eventually.

THE PROBLEM: But as concerns about the debt and Trump’s unpredictable tariff policy grow, investors are getting more and more nervous about the U.S. government’s ability to pay back those bonds.

  • That means to entice buyers, the government has to issue bonds with higher and higher interest rates.

Because everything in our economy is interconnected, that means interest rates for mortgages, car loans, credit cards, and business loans could all go up too.

  • If they go up too much—borrowing could come to a standstill, and we’d be on the verge of a complete economic downturn that will make 2009 look like a cakewalk.

BUT BUT BUT: Trump’s tax cuts aren’t a done deal yet—and a bond market freakout a few weeks ago forced him to relent on his most insanely high tariffs.

  • There’s also the possibility that soulless “hard liners” may force him to cut even more spending to avoid more debt—but that would come at the expense of social programs that serve working-class Americans.

BOTTOM LINE: The working class can’t afford another big tax break for the rich. Either it screws us directly with service cuts—or screws the entire economy for everybody long term.

GO DEEPER: Progressive economist Robert Reich has a simple solution to all this.

Clarification on Yesterday’s Edition

Yesterday we reported that the United Nations’ humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher warned that 14,000 babies were at risk of dying in Gaza in the next 48 hours if Israel did not let aid into the territory soon. Fletcher made the remarks in an interview with the BBC.

After we sent out our email, the BBC issued a clarification offered by the U.N. stating that Fletcher misspoke. Fletcher had confused a report that said 14,000 babies may die over the next year if aid wasn’t let in immediately.

While pro-Israeli press deemed the whole statement from Fletcher a lie, the U.N. defended the sentiment of his comments.

Per the BBC, a spokesperson said, “We know for a fact that there are babies who are in urgent life-saving need of these supplements that need to come in because their mothers are unable to feed themselves. And if they do not get those, they will be in mortal danger.”
