Trump targets Mamdani, but Mamdani won’t back down

Zohran Mamdani just made history—and now the Trump administration wants to deport him for it.
THE DETAILS: On Monday, Mamdani was officially declared the winner of the Democratic primary for NYC mayor.
After all the votes were counted, it wasn’t even close: Zohran trounced Cuomo, winning 56% to 42%.
Clearly rattled by the 33-year-old Democratic Socialist’s success, Trump lashed out, lying and claiming that Mamdani could be in the country illegally.
BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE: A Republican congressman even went so far as to claim Mamdani lied during the naturalization process—while using a vile slur.
Mamdani was born in Uganda but raised in New York City, becoming a citizen after graduating college.
The calls come as the Trump administration is pushing for rule changes that would make it much easier to strip naturalized citizens of their U.S. citizenship.
BIG PICTURE: Mamdani is a Muslim, a democratic socialist, and now the official winner of NYC’s mayoral primary. So of course, Trump wants him investigated.
Why? Because Mamdani dared to say that ICE doesn’t belong in New York.
Mamdani was quick to fire back, however, saying he can’t be intimidated.
BOTTOM LINE: This is fascism. Stripping political opponents of their citizenship is a page straight out of the fascist playbook—and it’s happening in America’s biggest city.
But he’s largely standing alone. The Democratic establishment failed to rally to his side, despite his energizing young voters, driving new voter registrations, and flipping districts in NYC that Trump managed to win by large margins.
The real crime—to Trump and corporate Democrats—is that a socialist won—and the working class might actually take power.
➡️ Question of the Day
Yesterday we asked, are you proud to be an American? Not many people were.

A. Smoot voted no and said what a lot of people did: “I’m 75 and I am so angry and ashamed of how our country has devolved into a cruel and insensitive nation. I never thought I’d see my country destroyed in my lifetime. We are no longer the shining city on the hill or a beacon of light to the rest of the world. All we seem to value is money, at any cost.”
Isaac also voted no: “I am embarrassed to be an American today. I had always thought that I lived in the best place in the world, but sadly, no longer. I'm trying to figure out how I can move to another country.”
Still others had hope. Gus voted yes and said: “I am proud of growing up in a country known for social justice. I am NOT proud of what we have become with Trump & his supporters. I have to HOPE that we will overcome this horrendous period.”
TODAY’S QUESTION: Today we want to know, do you trust the mainstream media? Tell us why or why not after you vote.

Trump’s big deadly bill passes Senate—but it’s far from law
Senate Republicans finally passed Trump’s nearly 1,000-page megabill yesterday—with tax cuts for the rich and deep cuts to Medicaid, food aid, and climate programs—but getting it through the House won’t be easy. GOP factions there are already threatening to tank it over changes made in the Senate. Full story from NPR.
Paramount will pay outrageous $16 million to Trump over ‘60 Minutes’ segment
In an outrageous capitulation to protect its own corporate interests over the independence of the press, Paramount has agreed to pay $16 million to settle a lawsuit over a segment on “60 Minutes.” The move comes amid pressure from Trump’s administration, which must approve Paramount’s merger deal. Journalists and press freedom advocates are calling it a dangerous precedent—and two top CBS News execs have already resigned in protest. Full story from AP.
Next big protests set for July 4th
Instead of fireworks and flag-waving, thousands are expected to hit the streets this Independence Day to protest Trump’s authoritarianism, immigration raids, and attacks on civil liberties. From “No Kings 2.0” rallies to Women’s March-organized actions in over 140 cities, organizers say they’re fighting for real freedom. Full story from Time Magazine - and here’s a map and list of cities holding protests from Newsweek.
Philadelphia’s largest city workers’ union goes on strike
Philadelphia’s largest blue-collar union is on strike following weeks of negotiations over pay. The union—representing 9,000 city workers, including sanitation workers, city mechanics, 911 dispatchers and school crossing guards—want a higher cost of living increase. Full story from WHYY.
U.S. shamefully skips global anti-poverty summit as world unites without us
While over 70 nations backed a sweeping plan to raise trillions to fight poverty, the U.S. walked away—refusing to support reforms aimed at easing debt and funding food, healthcare, and education worldwide. The “Seville Commitment” calls for bold global action. America’s excuse? It didn’t like the part about taxing the rich and reining in financial institutions. Full story from AP.

IN DEPTH
Newsom guts environmental protections—in the name of “abundance”
Eager to prove he's tackling California’s affordable housing crisis, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a pair of bills Monday he claims will help speed up new home construction.
Newsom and proponents call it “abundance”—but critics call it classic deregulation: a handout to developers that sacrifices workers and the environment without actually guaranteeing anything will be built.
DRIVING THE NEWS: The bills, rushed through the budget process with minimal public input, allow developers to bypass rigorous environmental reviews under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA)—a 1970 law designed to protect communities from environmental harm.
Over 100 organizations condemned the legislation, arguing it will "poison our air, water, and land" while disproportionately harming low-income communities and communities of color.
ZOOM OUT: The bills are part of a larger movement dubbed “abundance,” by New York Times journalist Ezra Klein (who even got a personal shout out from Newsom).
They claim the market will fix most problems if the government will just get out of the way—and have pushed to relax regulations they say hinder development.
But critics point out that over-regulation pales in comparison to the main problem: in our capitalist society, housing is considered first and foremost a business opportunity—instead of a human right.
BIG PICTURE: Conspicuously absent from California's "abundance" agenda are proven alternatives that could guarantee housing without enriching developers.
Community land trusts—which remove land from speculation while maintaining permanent affordability—received zero consideration.
Neither did cooperative housing models, robust public housing programs like Vienna's successful social housing, or municipal ownership of developments.
Instead of exploring these models that are people-led instead of developer-led, lawmakers doubled down on the same old “market forces” that created this problem in the first place.
BOTTOM LINE: Real abundance would mean housing as a human right and democratic control over private development. Newsom's version offers abundance only for developers' profits—while gutting protections that took decades to build.
