Trump reveals what he really thinks of us

In the past, American presidents have typically spent Memorial Day—a holiday established after the Civil War to honor the fallen—laying wreaths and visiting with veterans.

Trump did some of that, but he also did something much more characteristic: he used those events to attack his political enemies—and revealed (once again) what he thinks of the left.

WHAT HAPPENED: Early Monday, Trump posted an unhinged message on social media lashing out at "scum" on the left—before showing up at Arlington National Cemetery and repeating some of the same themes.

  • His deranged tweet, posted in all caps, began: “HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY TO ALL, INCLUDING THE SCUM THAT SPENT THE LAST FOUR YEARS TRYING TO DESTROY OUR COUNTRY THROUGH WARPED RADICAL LEFT MINDS…”

  • He goes on to call his political enemies “criminals,” “mentally insane,” and accused them of unleashing “murderers, drug dealers, rapists” into the U.S.—all without a single word about veterans or fallen soldiers.

Of course this shouldn’t come as a complete surprise, as Trump has previously called soldiers killed in action “suckers and losers.”

THERE’S MORE: Later, laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery, Trump again couldn’t resist making it about himself.

  • “That was a hard four years we went through,” he said, blaming the Biden administration for immigration and boasting about "fixing" the country.

WHY IT MATTERS: Trump’s message was clear—even on the most sacred of days, he’s more interested in stoking grievance than honoring sacrifice.

  • His attacks—against judges, immigrants, even the dead—are a reminder that his politics are about power, not people.

AND LET‘S BE CLEAR: When he’s calling the radical left “scum,” he’s talking about you and me—people who believe that all workers should be paid a living wage, that housing, healthcare, and education are a human right, and that the wealthy should pay their fair share in taxes.

  • To be fair, that’s not really left or right—it’s called being a decent human being.

But he thinks it makes us scum.

Trump calls Putin 'absolutely crazy' following Russia's latest barrage on Ukraine

Confronted by reporters after Russia launched the largest drone attack of the war, Trump appeared stunned. “I don’t know what the hell happened to Putin,” he said of the accused war criminal. Whether it’s genuine outrage or just misdirection from his too-cozy relationship with the Russian dictator—we’ll let you decide. Full story from NPR.

Trump delays 50% EU tariffs until July 9

Once again, Trump threatened steep tariffs on a close ally—only to back off at the last minute. Just days ago, he insisted he wasn’t “looking for a deal” with the EU and that a 50% tariff would take effect June 1. Now, it’s delayed until July 9. For now. Full story from CNN.

Federal judges consider creating own armed security force as threats mount

With threats against judges on the rise—fueled in no small part by Trump’s constant attacks—federal judges are weighing whether to take control of their own security. One idea? Put the U.S. Marshals under Chief Justice Roberts instead of Attorney General Pam Bondi, Trump’s handpicked loyalist. Full story from The Guardian.

Remembering former Congressman Charlie Rangel

Charles Rangel, the longtime Democratic congressman from New York who championed his native Harlem community on Capitol Hill for almost five decades, died Monday. Rangel was a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus. Full story from NBC News.

➡️ Question of the Day

Last week we asked, will the U.S. elect a woman as president soon? You were pretty divided.

Debroth voted yes and said, “Most Americans don’t drag around the centuries-old lie that women are ‘too fragile’ or ‘too emotional’ or other BS. Most educated forward thinking Americans know that a woman could not only do the job, she will excel at it and most likely bring welcome new ideas.“

Others weren’t so sure. Jagarlo voted no and said, “Men are very fragile and are afraid of smart women.”

Trudy was even more blunt: “This country will vote for a dog before a woman.”

IN DEPTH

The truth about Medicaid work requirements

Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful bill,” which passed the House by a single vote Thursday, gives Republicans something they’ve wanted for over a decade: work requirements for Medicaid.

  • On the surface, it might sound reasonable—make sure people are working, volunteering, or in school if they want public benefits.

But the truth is far more cynical: this is about kicking millions off Medicaid to fund massive tax cuts for the ultra-rich.

THE DETAILS: According to the New York Times, the bill requires childless adults seeking Medicaid to prove they worked, volunteered, or studied for at least 80 hours in the previous month.

  • The bill also allows states to make those requirements even stricter—requiring six months to a year of work before eligibility.

Failing to meet these requirements could also disqualify people from receiving subsidies on the Obamacare marketplace. The bill doesn’t say for how long.

WHY THE CHANGE? Republicans claim this is about “promoting personal responsibility” and increasing labor force participation.

  • But here’s the real reason: the bill would knock 7.6 million people off Medicaid rolls—savings they need to pay for Trump’s tax cuts for the wealthy.

Of course, they can’t just come out and say they’re slashing Medicaid. The program covers 78 million low-income Americans—about 1 in 5 people—and is broadly popular.

  • An outright attack would be political suicide. So instead, they disguise it as reform.

THE TRUTH: Most adults under 65 on Medicaid already work. Work requirements don’t help people find jobs—they just bury them in red tape.

  • When Arkansas implemented similar rules, thousands lost coverage simply because they didn’t know about the new paperwork, didn’t have internet access, or couldn’t navigate the system.

People with disabilities and those experiencing homelessness were the people hit hardest.

BOTTOM LINE: Work requirements don’t encourage work. They just deny healthcare to people who need it most—so billionaires can keep more of their money.

  • It’s not about fairness or responsibility. It’s about gutting the safety net without saying so out loud.

And unless we name it for what it is, they might just get away with it.
