THE TIDE TURNS
Why this has been a great week (all things considered)

The past week has been great for anyone who loves Democracy and hates fascism.
Several events showed that voters are rejecting both Trump’s plan to dismantle the federal government—and the cowardice of those who won’t stand up to him.
The ultra-conservative Wall Street Journal ran a headline yesterday that said it all: “The MAGA backlash has arrived.”
DRIVING THE NEWS: A massive progressive victory in the Wisconsin Supreme Court race and better-than-expected showings in special Florida elections dealt a major blow to Trump and billionaire influence.
In Wisconsin, co-Present Elon Musk poured $21 million into the conservativE candidate’s campaign—saying “the entire destiny of humanity” rested on the election. Now he’s changing his tune.
Meanwhile (in another headline we love) CNN reports that Tesla sales have plunged in the biggest decline in the company’s history.
AN “L” FOR ELON: All of this makes Elon a “loser”—the one thing Donald Trump can’t stand.
On Tuesday morning we predicted that a big loss would mean Trump showing Elon the door—and we were right.
News outlets are now reporting Trump is looking for a way to push the politically toxic Musk out the back door.
YES, AND: At the same time, Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) electrified Democrats and progressives with a 25-hour-long fiery defense of voting rights and reproductive healthcare.
He now holds the record for longest Senate speech ever, breaking the record held by racist monster Strom Thurmond (whom we hope is rotting in hell).
Even Trump’s asinine tariffs can’t dampen our mood too much (more on that shit show in a moment).
Last night, Senate Democrats passed an emergency measure to revoke Trump’s tariffs on Canada by finding four Republicans to join them.
WHAT IT MEANS: With Musk faltering, MAGA losing ground, and Democrats finding their voice, the working class is showing we won’t let our country collapse without a fight.
▶️ BONUS: Watch the amazing moment when Cory Booker ended his 25-hour speech.
🗳️ Question of the day
Today, we want to know: How are you feeling? Tell us why after you vote.
How are you feeling about the world right now? |
TUESDAY’S QUESTION: On Tuesday we asked, do you think Trump will somehow get a third term as president? Overwhelmingly you said no.

READERS WRITE: CF was one on the few who voted yes and said: “So far everything he said he’s going to do he has done. Every Republican is 100% behind him. He will do anything to stay in office.”
Salas disagreed. “The American people will not allow it.”
SML voted no and said “because he will be impeached this term!!!! Good always wins!! We cannot survive any more of his ridiculousness!!” Let’s hope so.

📰 Most important stories
There’s a lot of BS out there. Here’s what’s actually important—and why.
Michael Waltz’s team set up at least 20 Signal group chats for crises across the world
Why it matters: Remember when they chanted “lock her up?” It’s time for incompetent Republicans who knowingly endanger American lives face the same scrutiny they’ve always applied to Democrats (especially Hillary Clinton). Full story from Politico.
Israel accelerates ethnic cleansing in Gaza, makes another major, illegal land grab
Why it matters: The depravity and lawlessness of the Israeli government sinks to a new low (again). Israel is stepping up its ethnic cleansing campaign against indigenous Palestinians (again)—and it’s all funded by American taxpayers (again). Full story from Common Dreams.
➡️ TAKE ACTION: Call your senators now and tell them to support Bernie’s bill to block weapon sales to Israel.
Coming atmospheric river may trigger historic, life-threatening flooding across midwest
Why it matters: Up to four month’s worth of rain may fall in less than a week across part of the U.S., threatening major flooding and ultimately lives. It’s a reminder that climate change affects all of us—not just people on the coasts. Full story from AccuWeather.
THE UPSHOT
Trump’s tariffs will backfire—especially for him

On Wednesday, Donald Trump unveiled a sweeping set of new tariffs which are all but certain to raise prices for everyday Americans—if not set off a global economic crisis.
But it also means that Trump himself is going to take a hit, as an already unpopular president pushes an unpopular policy—that’s about to get even more unpopular.
THE LATEST: Overnight, the tariff news sent “shivers” through world markets as Dow futures plunged over 1,000 points.
THE POLITICS: Multiple polls show disapproval of Trump’s trade policies is growing—taking his broader approval rating with it—even before the announcement of tariffs yesterday.
Reuters released a poll yesterday showing Trump’s approval rating has already sank to 43%, the lowest since his return to office.
That same poll found that only 37% of voters approve of Trump’s handling of the economy. And that’s the starting point for this disastrous trade war.
Meanwhile, a Marquette Law school poll found that 58% of Americans (rightly) think Trump’s tariffs will hurt the economy.
And a CBS poll found that 64% of Americans think Trump isn’t doing enough to lower prices. Wait until the tariffs go into effect.
THE BIG PICTURE: All this will spell doom for Trump and the Republicans.
In the aforementioned Wall Street Journal editorial, “The MAGA Backlash Arrives,” the voice of America’s ruling class pleaded with Trump to refocus on lowering prices and abandon his trade war.
Their warning was stark: if Trump doesn’t relent on tariffs, “the MAGA majority may have a shorter run than advertised.” Let’s hope so.
WHAT'S NEXT: Trump is likely to offer carve-outs or exemptions in the weeks ahead to certain companies, industries, or countries, especially as the backlash grows and his numbers sink even further.
But the real damage could be politically fatal, exposing the absurd lie that he or the GOP care about the working class.
GO DEEPER: The New Republic believes only one thing explains Trump’s tariff madness.
