Why rich people in NYC are terrified

With just one week until New York City’s Democratic Primary, the knives are out for Zohran Mamdani—a Democratic Socialist running for mayor who’s got the city’s elites panicking.

DRIVING THE NEWS: Yesterday, The New York Times editorial board announced it wouldn’t endorse anyone in the race—but went out of its way to warn voters not to support Mamdani.

  • Despite centering his campaign on affordability in one of the world’s most expensive cities, the Times called Mamdani’s agenda “uniquely unsuited” to New York’s challenges.

SOME BACKGROUND: Mamdani, a two-term state lawmaker from Queens and proud member of the Democratic Socialists of America, has surged in recent polls.

  • Though he didn’t win over the Old Gray Lady, he’s won over voters—closing a 40-point polling gap and transforming the race into a two-man battle with disgraced former Governor Andrew Cuomo.

HIS PLATFORM: Mamdani is campaigning to freeze rents on the city’s nearly one million rent-stabilized apartments (about half the apartments in the city).

He plans to fund it largely by taxing the rich and major corporations.

THE BACKLASH: That agenda has the ruling class shook.

Even billionaire Mike Bloomberg—who once despised Cuomo—is lining up to stop Mamdani.

BOTTOM LINE: This isn’t just a mayoral race. It’s a class war in broad daylight. And Mamdani’s rise is proof that the left can still shake the foundation of American politics—if we dare to try.

YESTERDAY’S QUESTION: After the ‘No Kings’ protests made history, yesterday we asked, do protests work? Resoundingly, you said YES!

Reborn voted yes and said, “I have to believe they make a difference. It gives me HOPE that we can change this country's course.”

Meanwhile, Brittany disagreed: “I think they CAN work when a democracy is following the rules but I don't think it will work currently. This administration is not following the rules and sadly the only way we can keep our democracy is to break the rules too.”

Still, others pointed to history. Dadunakin said, “There were many many protests over the Vietnam war. It took a while, but eventually the US withdrew.”

New rules allow VA doctors to refuse to treat Democrats

Under Trump’s latest executive order, doctors at Veterans Affairs hospitals can now refuse to treat veterans based on political views or marital status—turning public healthcare into a tool of partisan control. It’s not just cruel; it’s a preview of how authoritarian capitalism punishes dissent, dehumanizes the poor, and destroys a massively popular socialized medicine program. Trump leaves G7 Summit early, posts Tehran should “evacuate immediately”

Trump abruptly left the G7 summit in Canada to address the escalating Israel-Iran conflict, skipping key diplomatic talks. While the White House claimed “much was accomplished,” Trump refused to sign the G7 statement urging de-escalation—and instead posted that Tehran should “evacuate immediately.” Full story from NBC News.

Trump family launches gold phone and mobile service in latest profiteering

Trump is now hawking a gold-plated smartphone and branded cell service while sitting in the White House—another shameless cash grab from a family that treats the presidency like a business license. It’s illegal profiteering in plain sight, and no agency is likely to hold them accountable while he’s in power. Full story from Common Dreams.

Trump’s ‘big beautiful bill’ could rig the housing market

Tucked inside Trump’s megabill is a huge giveaway to landlords. It lets them use unregulated AI to set rents—while banning cities from stopping the price-gouging. Capitalism calls it innovation. Renters call it exploitation. Full story from CNN.

Americans want more food aid, not less

A new poll found that most Americans want to protect Medicaid and food aid—but Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” does the opposite. It’s another case of politicians serving the wealthy, not the people. Full story from AP.

IN DEPTH

Inside Elon Musk’s chaotic takeover of Social Security

A new investigation by The New York Times reveals just how deep Elon Musk’s takeover of Social Security went—and how much chaos his team caused inside one of the government’s most trusted agencies.

WHAT’S NEW: Musk reportedly wasn’t focused on Social Security at first—until his “DOGE” team misread internal data they thought showed widespread fraud (it didn’t).

  • That included the now-debunked claim that 40% of all Social Security calls came from scammers.

When agency staff tried to correct the error, they were ignored. Instead, Musk and DOGE doubled down, spreading lies that were later repeated by Trump, Fox News, and JD Vance.

THAT’S NOT ALL: The Times also reports that Musk’s “DOGE” team continued accessing Americans’ sensitive Social Security data even after a federal judge ordered them to stop.

  • Also, the Times proves that Trump and Elon used the agency to punish their political rivals. Social Security canceled contracts in Maine after the state’s Democratic governor clashed with Trump over trans rights—decisions driven by DOGE.

The canceled contracts affected basic services like issuing newborns Social Security numbers.

THE RESULT: Meanwhile, lines at field offices exploded across the country. Millions panicked, believing their benefits were at risk. And decisions that impacted 74 million people were being driven by memes, misinformation, and Musk’s ego.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Trump repeatedly promised not to touch Social Security. But by unleashing a drug-addled billionaire on the agency, he jeopardized the hard-earned benefits of millions—creating chaos that will take years to undo.
