TOP STORY
‘No Kings’ protests make history

Thousands of protesters rally in front of City Hall in San Francisco.
Over the weekend, millions of Americans turned out in the streets to protest Donald Trump and his neo-fascist, anti-immigrant, pro-billionaire agenda.
The “No Kings” protests—organized at more than 2,100 sites nationwide—marked what may be the largest single day of demonstrations in U.S. history, with turnout estimated between 4 and 6 million people.
THE DETAILS: Protesters gathered in all 50 states—and even overseas—from major cities like New York, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles to small towns like Pentwater, Michigan, and Stowe, Vermont (where Bernie was).
The protest turnout was in stark contrast to Trump’s taxpayer-funded military parade in Washington, D.C., that drew a weak crowd and has been described as “lame.”
Organizers intentionally avoided protesting in D.C. to draw a stark line between democracy and autocracy.
THE DARK SPOTS: The day was marred by violence in Minnesota, where a Democratic lawmaker and her husband were murdered in what officials called a politically motivated assassination.
Despite warnings, thousands still gathered at the Minnesota State Capitol in a powerful act of defiance.
Also, a member of the peacekeeping team in Salt Lake City shot and killed a would-be gunman and a bystander in what organizers said could have been a mass casualty event.
BIG PICTURE: Since Trump’s second term began, protest activity has surged.
The Harvard-based Crowd Counting Consortium says 2025’s protests already dwarf those from his first term.

BOTTOM LINE: Saturday’s “No Kings” turnout—1-2% of the U.S. population—underscores the growing resistance to a government seen as catering to billionaires and white nationalists over everyday Americans.
GO DEEPER: BuzzFeed has put together a list of 23 signs from the protests so clever they should be framed 🤣
➡️ Question of the Day
Given the enormity of the protests this past weekend, we want to know—do you think protests work? Why or why not? Tell us after you vote!
In our last poll before break we asked, in the feud between Musk and Trump, who will win? It was very close!

Macourt voted for Elon and said, “Sadly, the Republicans can be bought. So I think if Elon will put his money behind any Republicans that vote no for this bill he will win.”
Tom voted Trump and said, “Trump has complete control over all media and seems to continue to bully all of the legislative leaders to give him everything he wants, including his massive corruption of our leaders.”
But I think Lori really spoke for us all: “Actually, I am hoping that BOTH lose, since they are only thinking of themselves, and not the American public AT ALL!”

Suspected Minnesota assassin caught after massive manhunt
Vance Boelter crawled to officers in surrender last night after they located him in the woods near his home. He’s been arrested and charged with two counts of murder and two of attempted murder. It’s not yet clear exactly what his motive was, but friends say he was a deeply religious conservative and a MAGA maniac. Full story from AP.
ICE refuses to release Mahmoud Khalil despite court order
The Trump administration is again openly defying a court order. This time, ICE agents are refusing to release anti-genocide protester Mahmoud Khalil. Mahmoud has been in ICE custody since March, and missed the birth of his child. It’s part of a broader plan by Trump to pay lip service to the courts—but do whatever the hell he wants. Full story from The New Republic.
Democrats call for Noem’s resignation after assault of U.S. senator
Sen. Elizabeth Warren and others say Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem should resign after the assault by law enforcement of Sen. Alex Padilla at a press event Thursday. Warren specifically is calling for an independent investigation, while others have called the assault “a red line for America.” Full story from Common Dreams.
Trump orders ICE to target Democratic-run cities
In his latest move to politicize every aspect of the federal government, Trump now wants his secret immigration police to focus on Democratic-run cities. Sadly, very few Democratic leaders are standing up to this blatant abuse of power. They should be calling it what it is: scapegoating a vulnerable minority to distract from an economy rigged against workers. Full story from ABC News.
IN DEPTH
What an all-out Israel-Iran war means for us
Over the weekend, Israel took the extraordinary step of attacking Iran in an unprovoked strike to try and take out Iran’s nuclear weapons program.
Since then, the two countries have been trading missile attacks, killing civilians on both sides.
But what would an all-out war between Israel and Iran mean for us—working-class Americans?
ZOOM OUT: Because Israel and Iran don’t border each other, a ground invasion of either country is unlikely. That also makes it very unlikely that Trump would send in ground troops either.
Still, as Israel’s closest ally, Iran could choose to target U.S. military bases in the Middle East. That would almost certainly draw a response in the form of some sort of bombing campaign.
Iran is not a global superpower and does not have the capability of striking the U.S. directly.
BUT BUT BUT: An all-out Israel/Iran war will disrupt global oil supplies, driving up the price of gas—and with it, everything else.
Since roughly half of the world’s oil reserves are in the region, oil prices are heavily impacted by turmoil in the Middle East.
Not to mention—fossil fuel companies would likely use a war to increase prices artificially—filling their coffers and blaming the war (greedflation).
Such a spike in oil prices would ripple through the economy, raising costs for transportation, food, heating, and manufacturing.
Iran is already threatening to shut down the Straight of Hormuz, which 20% of the world’s oil flows through. The U.S. Energy Information Administration has called it “the world’s most important oil transit chokepoint.”
BIG PICTURE: If Iran shuts down the straight of Hormuz, or the war escalates broadly, working-class Americans will be hit with even higher prices everywhere.
If prices spike across the board, we’ll have Israel’s unprovoked war to thank.
