The only way to describe Trump’s tax cuts

There’s only one way to describe Donald Trump’s huge proposed tax cuts for the rich: an act of class warfare.

DRIVING THE NEWS: Yesterday, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office released its analysis of Trump’s “big, beautiful” bill that passed the House and is currently being considered by the Senate.

  • The CBO found that if adopted, Trump’s bill would leave some 10.9 million working-class people without health insurance.

That’s because in order to “pay” for massive tax breaks for the wealthy and corporations, the bill slashes Medicaid and makes it harder to access Obamacare coverage.

  • And that’s not all—the same CBO analysis found that the bill would add $2.4 trillion to the national debt over the next ten years. (Which, by the way, wouldn’t be such a crisis if we rethought how federal spending and deficits actually work.)

THE REAL COST: It’s not just that people will lose healthcare—it’s that people will actually die because of this legislation.

  • An analysis published Tuesday by the University of Pennsylvania and Yale estimates that more than 51,000 people across the U.S. would die unnecessarily each year due to the cuts.

This isn’t just a massive redistribution of wealth from the bottom to the top—it’s an act of war—with real, deadly consequences.

ZOOM OUT: Of course, this class war didn’t start with Trump. It’s been going on for decades.

  • As historian Heather Cox Richardson has documented, the ultra-rich have fought to dismantle the New Deal since the day it was passed.

As recently as yesterday, Bernie Sanders used these very words to describe the situation we’re in. This is a class war—and we’re losing.

BUT BUT BUT: The war isn’t over. And neither is this particular battle.

  • Elon Musk’s public attacks on the bill exposed growing divisions within the Republican Party. That could be enough to stall or even sink the legislation—at least in its current form.

The larger war can still be won—but only if we recognize what we’re up against and organize like our lives depend on it. Because for millions of people, their lives really do depend on it.

➡️ Question of the Day

Given Elon Musk’s staunch opposition to Trump’s tax bill, we want to know—who do you think will win in the fight between Elon and Trump? Tell us why after you vote!

Earlier this week we asked, do you support paying more in taxes to get Medicare for All? The response was overwhelming.

Frank and Ellen voted no, echoing a concern many readers shared: “I am on a fixed income and I currently pay for both Medicare and a Medicare supplement. Let the wealthiest people pay a straight 15% and then there would be no need to increase taxes on those of us who are barely getting by.”

Joe voted yes: “Financially it's a wash. You take more from one place and less from another place and you break out just about even. But this way, everyone will be covered, not just the employed or the wealthy.”

Nat also voted yes: “It would get rid of the insurance lobbyists. Health care is a right to every person no matter and people who can't afford Healthcare would now be covered. I can see where we would all be healthier.“ That would be a GREAT thing!

🗞️ Making News

Trump announces travel ban and restrictions on 19 countries

Trump has reinstated and expanded his travel ban—this time targeting 19 countries, mostly in the Global South. The new ban doesn’t make America safer—it deepens global inequality, punishes countries destabilized by U.S. wars and sanctions, and shuts the door on refugees fleeing crises we helped create. From Afghanistan to Haiti, this policy is about scapegoating the vulnerable, not national security. Full story from the AP.

Trump escalates war on higher ed, threatens Columbia’s accreditation

In another escalation of his crusade against America’s universities and freedom of speech—the Trump administration is now threatening Columbia’s accreditation. The move comes after Trump’s Education Department already froze millions in research funding and forced staffing cuts. This politically motivated attack is aimed at punishing student dissent and chilling any and all criticism of Israel. Full story from NBC News.

ICE mass arrests spark chaos in Chicago as activists fight back

Activists are showing that they won’t let Trump’s Gestapo terrorize our communities without a fight. After receiving reports of mass arrests, they flooded the scene to resist and document what was happening in the South Loop. At least 10 people were detained after being summoned for surprise “check-ins,” with federal agents shoving protesters and even knocking one alderman to the ground. New report: U.S. bombing that killed 84 in Yemen was an 'apparent war crime'

A new report from Human Rights Watch says the Trump administration’s April bombing of a Yemeni oil port—while workers were still on site—was an “apparent war crime.” The U.S. strike killed 84 civilians, including first responders and children. The group said the attack, which also wounded more than 150 civilians, demonstrated "a callous disregard for civilian lives" and should be investigated. Full story from Common Dreams.

Workers call out Trump’s steel deal as billionaire giveaway

Trump is hailing a $14B deal with Japan’s Nippon Steel as a revival of American industry—but steelworkers aren’t buying it. The same president who once opposed foreign takeovers is now backing a plan many call a betrayal: rewarding union-busting corporations while gutting labor protections and cozying up to billionaire executives. “Just another snake-oil pitch,” one longtime worker said. The union wasn’t even invited to the table. Full story from The Guardian.

IN DEPTH

Proof young Progressives can save the Democrats

A 24-year-old progressive just crushed a Republican in deep-red South Carolina on Tuesday—and sent a wake-up call to the Democratic establishment.

WHAT HAPPENED: Keishan Scott, a preacher, progressive, and climate justice advocate won a special election for the state’s 50th House District with nearly 71% of the vote.

  • Keishan won by more than 40 points over his GOP opponent, in a district Kamala Harris barely won last November.

SOME BACKGROUND: Scott’s campaign focused on climate justice, clean water, economic fairness, and an explicit rejection of corporate money.

  • His platform was personal: his family’s been hit by toxic pollution, and he’s vowed to fight “forever chemicals” like PFAS in the Statehouse.

“This isn’t about politics. It’s about people,” he said Tuesday night.

WHY IT MATTERS: Scott’s win is a resounding rejection of the party’s obsession with chasing moderates and a clear sign that unapologetic progressives can win—even in the South.

  • His victory proves that young, working-class candidates with lived experience—not billionaires and party insiders—can energize voters and win.

WHAT’S NEXT: Democrats looking to 2026—and 2028—should take note: the path to survival isn’t through donor galas or vague centrism. It’s through bold, working-class leadership like Keishan Scott’s.

This win isn’t an outlier—it’s a warning shot.
